Pirates under no pressure to defeat Mombasa in preseason friendly

The long-standing rivalry between South Coast Pirates and Mombasa RFC may be about to be rekindled but SCP head coach Lawrence Buyachi is adamant that his players won’t losing any amount of sleep as the two sides prepare to face each other in a preseason friendly scheduled for October 13th at Mombasa Sports Club.

Representing the coast region in the Championship league, the two teams have been drawn to face each other in the opening round of the competition which begins on November 17th and as the curtain raiser approaches, fans in the coast region will be treated to a tantalizing friendly battle which will no doubt be closely fought for as each team continues its respective preparations for the new season.

But Buyachi is keen to ensure the SCP players aren’t be fazed by the Saturday evening occasion and has insisted that they are under no pressure to continue keep their preseason winning run alive after defeating Malindi 27-14 in the opening weekend of October. A win over Mombasa would despite extending the preseason wins to two ahead of fixtures against Pwani Sharks and TUM Marines, also deal a psychological blow to the hosts who since the formation of the Championship league, are still yet to defeat Pirates in a fifteens match.

Pirates defeated Mombasa RFC home and away during the first edition of the Championship league back in the 2016/17 season but for Mombasa, the pain of being twice humiliated was quickly put to bed as they picked themselves up and went all the way to reach the final and earn promotion to the Kenya Cup.

‘’The good thing is that we have no pressure going into the match, just trying our systems and combinations.’’ said Buyachi who will square in out with another newly appointed coach Lewis Olaka, who replaced Chris Atingo as the Mombasa RFC head coach in an announcement that was made not so long ago.

The appointment of the highly rated Olaka along with other coaches forming a completely new-look technical team may trigger a renaissance at the club and with promotion back to the Kenya Cup seeming to be key on Mombasa’s to-do list, a preseason test against one of its rivals means there will be no love lost when SCP arrive for the friendly.

‘’Whatever the result, it has no effect on us. We just want to gauge how we are playing away against a very worthy opponent.’’ added Buyachi
