Joseph Musyoki has been announced as captain of South Coast Pirates for the 2018 National Sevens Series by newly appointed head coach Lawrence Buyachi, who is set to make his official managerial debut for the club at Kabeberi Sevens to be held in Machakos on 18/19 August 2018.
Musyoki, who along with Kevin Amiani, scored four tries to emerge the club’s top try scorers in the 2017/18 Championship season, has grown to become a key figure at the club through his outstanding performances in the SCP jersey prompting the new manager to pick the youngster to lead the squad he has selected for his debut outing. Recently last month, he was part of the Roaring Forties squad which claimed the inaugural George Barbour Cup during the tenth edition of the Diani Beach Touch Rugby tournament held at Forty Thieves Beach Bar and Restaurant.
Musyoki will be assisted by Collins Kabayo, another player who has risen steadily through the SCP ranks.
South Coast Pirates will take part in the tournament as Kwale County following a successful move by the SCP board to secure funding from the County Government of Kwale in order to ensure that the club features in at least one sevens tournament aside Driftwood Sevens, which is played in the Coast region. Kabeberi Sevens will be followed by Driftwood Sevens at Mombasa Sports Club on 25/26 August 2018, with the club certain to honor the coastal leg of the circuit alongside tournament hosts Mombasa RFC.
As this will be Kwale County’s first appearance on the sevens front, the team has been placed in the Division Two tournament and will attempt to overcome all odds so as to reach the main cup stages of the Machakos leg for a chance to remain in the running for Division one participation in Mombasa. As a result, the team has been paired in Pool and will play against Embu RFC, Administration Police and CITAM Kisumu in the preliminary rounds of the tournament on Saturday. The two-day tournament will involve knockout matches taking place on Sunday.
During the team naming prior to the squad leaving for Machakos, head coach Buyachi lauded the team’s preparations in the recent weeks and expressed trust in the youthful squad he has picked to represent Kwale County. Musyoki and Kabayo are complemented by Charles Okwemba and Jacob Adera as among the leaders in the squad which also features a strong contingent of academy players.
