Diani-based SC Pirates ended their winless streak in the Kenya Cup with a historic 15-8 victory over Strathmore Leos at the Seacrest International Grounds in Diani yesterday.
The landmark win saw the Pirates secure their first-ever triumph in the league, thanks to a stellar performance from winger Devin Abuga.
Making his season debut, Abuga wasted no time in making an impact, scoring a try in the opening minutes to put Pirates ahead 5-0. Although the conversion attempt went wide, the Pirates maintained pressure throughout the first half. Abuga struck again just before halftime with a second try, giving the home side a commanding 12-0 lead at the break.
The second half saw a resurgent Strathmore Leos side narrow the gap. They crossed the try line, thanks to Philemon Olang’s try to make it 12-5 and later capitalized on Arnold Muita’s penalty, cutting the deficit further to 12-8. However, Pirates’ Kelly Akengo restored calm for the hosts with a well-taken back to back penalties to extend their lead to 18-8. The Pirates’ defense held firm in the closing stages, securing the memorable victory.
Speaking to the clubs media after the match, SC Pirates coach Kevin Amiani expressed his delight:
“This win means everything to the team. We’ve worked tirelessly, and today’s result is a testament to the effort and belief these players have. Devin Abuga’s return was a huge boost, and his performance speaks for itself. We’re building something special here, and this is just the beginning.”
Pirates travel to Nairobi next weekend as they play Mwamba RFC in the 6th round of the 2024/24 Kenya Cup season.
